I had an unconventional education. My parents homeschooled me so they could travel without the problem of pulling me out of school and putting me back. I lived in Hamilton, Ohio, but also New Delhi and Cairo, while they taught me history, writing, math. But though there was a lot they coud teach me, the most valuable thing was to find out for myself.
There were a lot of things I wanted to know that couldn't be easily learned from books. How my computers and my cell phone worked, for instance. When my curiosity was piqued, I would make it a point to teach teach myself.
When I was 11 I had heard about programming. I then attended several coding camps to learn the basics. Where I could start coding on my own, using tutorials to guide me along the way. My love for electronics followed a similar path, starting with simple Lego assemblies, eventually moving on to Tinker Crates and Nintendo Labo, and finally building my own computers.
In January 2018 we embarked on a two year trip around Asia and Europe. I attended a school in Luxembourg and met people from all walks of life. We shared stories and experiences, and I was fascinated by the unique interpretations each of us had of the world. It was like discovering a hidden, branching path that no one else knew about. And while I struggled a little to keep up with my European and Asian fellow students in math and science, I was the only one who liked the programming class!
My passion for making things led me to some interesting oppurtunities. I used GoAnimate to create videos to help students with a college writing assignment. I took part in Global Game Jam at Microsoft headquarters in new York City, and prototyped an electronic board game at Fat Cat Makespace. All of these experiences fueled my passion for creating cool things, telling interesting stories, and bringing people together. And I knew games could be a medium for me to accomplish all three.
Games are not just entertainment. They are experiences that transport us to worlds, concepts, and philosophies that only exist in our heads. A single game can change the way we view the world. My goal is to create games that do just that, to design immersive worlds that captivate players and allow them to form communities around my concepts, my characters, and my ideas. I want to be one of the team that's building worlds that change people's lives.
